Abstract

Sustainable development relies on effective regulatory frameworks and economic instruments, with banks playing a critical role. In an increasingly globalized economy, banks face environmental risks that impact their assets and profitability. Green banking promotes sustainable finance by integrating environmental, social, and governance criteria into decision-making. This qualitative study interviewed 35 senior decision-makers at Indian banks to explore the role of commercial banks in advancing green finance. This research explores the critical role that commercial banks play in the advancement of green finance. This study contributes to the academic body of knowledge by examining the existing green practices and proposing a framework to understand how banks can facilitate greening the financial system. The practical contribution of this study include recommendations of what banks may implement at their workplace to foster an environmentally conscious financial system. The insights from this study will inform policy makers, banking decision makers, and other stakeholders on the strategies to adopt to ensure resilience and sustainability within the financial sector.
