Abstract

Artificial Intelligence in Sri Lanka’s hotel industry reshapes the perception of sustainable performance by addressing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities. This approach contributes to balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives. As a significant part of the island nation’s economy, the hotel sector encounters considerable sustainability challenges. Key concepts emerging in the hotel and tourism industry, aligned with sustainable tourism and Artificial Intelligence (AI) interventions, include eco-tourism models, smart hotels, robotic room attendants, and mobile check-in systems. However, limited studies have explored the combined impact of AI and sustainability. This paper investigates the question of how Artificial Intelligence improves the sustainable performance of the hotel industry in Sri Lanka. A systematic literature review analysing 18 empirical studies highlights how AI can enhance energy efficiency, waste management, and operational effectiveness. The research findings explore the role of AI in reducing carbon footprints, optimising resource usage, and catering to eco-conscious travellers. AI tools and applications have introduced transformative changes to the hotel sector, turning traditional hotels into smart hotels. The Balanced Scorecard is identified as an effective performance evaluation tool for sustainability, extending beyond financial metrics. By addressing existing gaps, this research provides actionable insights for hotel management, emphasising the importance of investing in AI applications, infrastructure, and sustainable practices. Furthermore, it stresses the need to increase team awareness of AI’s potential to advance green hotel initiatives. This, in turn, promotes sustainable performance and growth in Sri Lanka’s hotel industry, guiding stakeholders toward achieving long-term environmental and economic objectives through sustainable innovation.
