Abstract

The ink wash freehand paintings of Badashanren are imbued with dialectical Zen thinking and a sense of solitary peril. Despite the trials of his rugged life and his reclusive existence, his works do not merely present a weak display of “emptiness and thoughtlessness.” Instead, they express a “solitary and indignant state of mind” that directly points to the human heart. His works do not focus on depicting a journey of sorrow and pain but rather emphasize the expression of a rebellious spirit through the evolution from “form and spirit” to “hidden brilliance” and ultimately to “style and integrity.” Analyzing Badashanren’s works from the perspective of body language can provide a more comprehensive understanding of his artistic achievements and offer valuable guidance for the study of cultural heritage and artistic creation.
