- Abstract
Event planning is traditionally associated with substantial waste generation, contributing significantly to environmental degradation. With events ranging from small community gatherings to large-scale festivals, the amount of waste produced often in the form of single-use plastics, food leftovers, and disposable materials pose a critical challenge. The study begins by reviewing the current landscape of waste management in event planning, highlighting key statistics that underscore the urgency of addressing this issue. For example, large events can produce up to 2.5 kilograms of waste per attendee per day, a figure that often escalates in multi-day events. Additionally, food waste alone can account for 30% to 50% of total event waste, pointing to significant opportunities for improvement. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of technology in reducing waste, such as mobile apps for ticketing and event information, which significantly cut down on paper waste. The research methodology for this paper will be a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. It will include a detailed literature review to establish the theoretical framework and context for waste management in event planning. Surveys and interviews will be conducted with event organizers, vendors, and attendees to gather insights on current practices and attitudes toward waste reduction. Data from these surveys will be analyzed to identify common challenges and effective strategies. The paper concludes by offering a set of actionable recommendations tailored to different types of events, from small gatherings to large-scale conferences, with the aim of encouraging widespread adoption of sustainable practices in the event management industry.
