- Abstract
This article explores the debate around when is the best time for students to learn a second or foreign language, considering the concept of the “critical period” in language acquisition. The common belief that “younger is better” suggests that children have a better capacity for language acquisition than adults. The case study on Genie suggests that there are limitations to language if it is not started at a certain age. In addition, this article also discusses the development of literacy in a second or foreign language, especially in reading and writing skills. The results show that although the literacy process in second language students follows a similar pattern to students learning English as a mother tongue, they experience challenges due to differences in language systems. The results of this study aim to provide insight into the role of age in second or foreign language literacy learning and its relation to first language literacy learning.
