Abstract

Active learning is considered one of the effective teaching methods to enhance student engagement in school. Student engagement in active learning is influenced not only by environmental factors such as classroom atmosphere but also by the student-teacher relationship. This research aims to examine the role of the student-teacher relationship as a moderator in the relationship between active learning and student engagement in elementary school. This study employs a quantitative correlational method, collecting data from 173 students and 61 teachers. The research utilizes three measurement tools such as the Student Engagement Instrument-Elementary Version (SEI-E) by Appleton [1] to measure student engagement in learning, the Self-Assessment on Active Learning and Critical Thinking (SSACT) by Khoiriyah [2], and the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale-Short Form (STRS) by Pianta [3]. Participants in this study were selected using purposive sampling technique, with the criteria of fourth, fifth, sixth grade students who have experienced active learning methods, and teachers who implement active learning methods in their classrooms. The conclusion from this research, there is a positive relationship between active learning and student engagement. The student-teacher relationship in this study was found have no moderating role in the relationship between active learning and student engagement in elementary school. The benefits of this research are expected to contribute to the development of more suitable and appropriate learning methods for elementary school students and to enhance the student-teacher relationship to improve student engagement in learning.
