- Abstract
Women’s participation in the labor market has been steadily increasing in recent years, particularly among mothers who enter the workforce to help support their family’s economic needs. However, working mothers face various challenges, including balancing job responsibilities with domestic duties. Moreover, mothers often experience a higher risk of receiving low wages and face difficulties in entering the formal sector, especially those who are widows and serve as the sole breadwinners for their families. Using secondary data from the 2022 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) and a logistic regression analysis method, the findings of this study indicate that both married and widowed working mothers have the potential to reduce the likelihood of their families falling into poverty. However, further analysis shows that only mothers employed in the formal sector can significantly reduce the probability of family poverty compared to those in the informal sector, regardless of their marital status. Additionally, the characteristics of the mother, husband, and household were also found to influence the outcomes in this study. This research highlights the need for policies that enhance access to formal employment, equal pay, and support systems for working mothers to improve both their economic stability and work-family balance.
