Abstract

This study analyzed factors associated with delayed treatment initiation among patients with drug-sensitive tuberculosis (TB) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. A retrospective observational study was conducted using medical records of drug-sensitive TB patients registered between January and December 2023 at Labuang Baji Hospital, a TB referral center, and the Makassar Health Office. Delayed treatment initiation was defined as starting anti-tuberculosis therapy more than 15 days after diagnosis. Binary logistic regression identified factors associated with treatment delay, reported as odds ratios and adjusted odds ratios. A total of 8,258 patients were included. Most delays occurred among men (59.2%) and patients aged 18–30 years (24.3%). Delays of more than 30 days were common and were associated with older age, comorbidities, lack of insurance, referral from other facilities, and pulmonary TB. Strengthening local services, referral systems, and education for vulnerable groups is essential to reduce treatment delays and improve TB care outcomes locally.
