- Abstract
Digital transformation (DT) in open universities is a critical yet underexplored frontier in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal for quality education. This transformation involves integrating digital tools and strategies to enhance educational delivery, improve accessibility, and maintain competitive advantages. A comparative perspective on the strategies, challenges, and opportunities associated with digital transformation in open universities is provided. This study analyzes DT strategies in three open universities (UKOU, OUC, Ghana) through a dual lens of institutional maturity and sustainability. It analyzes the opportunities and challenges, as well as the strengths and weaknesses, facing open universities. Using a customized Digital Maturity Model (DMM), the author identifies four sustainability challenges: financial resilience, infrastructural scalability, the environmental impact of digital tools, and equitable access. The findings reveal divergent pathways. The UKOU prioritizes R&D-driven innovation, the OUC aligns with state policy mandates, and Ghana adopts hybrid OER models to overcome infrastructural gaps. The paper concludes with a sustainability framework for DT in open education, emphasizing cross-institutional collaboration and the lifecycle assessment of digital initiatives.
