Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of digital teaching skills training for rural teachers in J City, China, using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). It is based on 273 valid survey responses to examine how the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework impacts teachers’ digital competencies. The findings reveal that cognitive presence has the most significant influence on digital teaching skills, followed by social presence, while teaching presence shows only a minimal effect. These results suggest that encouraging cognitive engagement and social interactions may be more beneficial for enhancing digital competencies than focusing solely on teaching presence. Additionally, this study emphasizes the critical importance of customized training programs designed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by educators in rural areas. It provides valuable insights for improving digital training programs for rural educators, highlighting the importance of strategies that promote deeper cognitive engagement and collaborative learning environments, along with ongoing professional development efforts to maximize training effectiveness.
