- Abstract
Previous research has explored the comparative dimensions of Buddhism and Chinese philosophy including their differing approaches to filial piety. In early Indian Buddhism, filial piety was viewed as a vital moral principle essential for social order, emphasized not merely as a concession to Brahminical ethics but as a significant virtue taught by Buddhist masters (Udalagama, 2024). However, discussions surrounding filial piety often overlook the nuances within various Buddhist traditions. While references to filial piety exist in Tibetan Buddhism, a comprehensive study specifically examining its role and significance in this context is lacking. Several key questions: What is the understanding of filial piety in Tibetan Buddhism? How is it practiced? What role does it play in moral teachings compared to Taoism? Additionally, how is filial piety linked to the ultimate goal of achieving Buddhahood? The aim of this study is to explore and clarify the understanding and practice of filial piety within Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in relation to its expressions in Chinese philosophy.
