- Abstract
Music is often seen as an effective way to relieve stress by increasing resistance while facing it. In order to further explore the relationship between resistance, music, and stress, participants in this study will be asked to play a game called Minesweeper, which requires them to finish it at extreme limited time to expose them to unfair situation and arouse their stress. They will play the game for two rounds while listening to music that is either self-selected, ocean waves rounds, or no any music: for the first round, they will be asked to play the game ten times without time limitation; for the second round, they will be asked to play the game ten times with an extreme time limitation for twenty seconds that is difficult for most people. Five minutes before the experiment began, the participants were asked to measure their heart rate. After each round of the game, the mental level was measured and the participants were asked to rate their stress level and willingness to continue the game. The result shows that while there is no significant difference of heart rate between three groups, the participants who listened to the waves scored significantly higher than those who listened to no music and those who listened to music of their own choice. Hence, the research indicates that distinct genres of music may influence an individual’s ability to recuperate from stressful circumstances. Consequently, middle school pupils may consider enhancing their resilience and self-assurance by immersing themselves in calming melodies like those of the ocean waves sounds.
