- Abstract
Public art is seen as a socially-oriented art form that encompasses several disciplines and mediums. Public artworks, as visual practices in communal places, can be either permanent sculptures, murals, and installations or ephemeral, interactive art projects that are publicly accessible, such as those included at art festivals and community-based participatory art. Two principal types exist for public art initiatives in rural regions. One is a top-down art practice orchestrated by official institutions, such as governments, while the other is a bottom-up art activity launched by artists or private entities. However, research on how rural or “Xiangtu” theme art is promoted in urban areas and its influence on viewers remains insufficient. This research aims to analyze the impact and effects of rural-themed arts policies or implementations on individuals in metropolitan areas. The principal research inquiry is: Does the promotion of “Xiangtu” arts in urban areas encourage individuals to engage with or get involved with rural arts? To explore this question, the author conducted a case study of the Guangdong Art Museum’s “Lives on the Soil: Exhibition of Country Theme Art From 1949” which integrate digital technologies and management, and performed in-depth interviews with several visitors.
