Abstract

The Northern Expedition War is an important event in the modern history of China, because the Kuomintang realized the formal unification of the country through the Northern Expedition War. Chiang Kai-shek and Wang Chingwei, as the main leaders of the Kuomintang at that time, had an important impact on China before and after the Northern Expedition. However, the direct on-off relationship between Wang Chingwei and Chiang Kai-shek represents the changing interests of the factions behind the two and the differences in their political ideas. This paper attempts to sort out the history of the relationship between the two men before and after the Northern Expedition war, analyze the process from Wang Jiang’s cooperation to the Zhongshan warship incident, and the outbreak of the “4.12” coup d ‘etat and the July 15 Incident after the Northern Expedition, and try to analyze the reasons for the change of this relationship from the perspective of party interests and personality characteristics of the two men. I believe that the overall interests of the Kuomintang to achieve reunification are the basis of their cooperation, and the factional struggles and different personalities of the political and military groups represented by the two are the main reasons for their contradictions and struggles.
