Abstract

The 2022 film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has incited discussion within Chinese and ethnic Chinese communities. Historically, during the past century, the prevailing ideology of “Orientalism” has fostered a vision of China and East Asia as subjugated, exploited, and diminished, notably highlighting a disparaging viewpoint. Nevertheless, the author asserts that this film exemplifies a tendency termed “Self-Orientalization.” Scholars argue that instead of “Self-Orientalization,” an effective method for intercultural communication is to convey accurate or meaningful cultural representations. For example, in Ang Lee’s films, he utilized several narrative techniques and artistic styles to convey Chinese philosophy and culture. This study aims to examine the representation of the Confucian concept of “Xingbenshan” (human nature is inherently good) in the film “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” The author aims to enhance the understanding of Chinese intercultural communication studies through contextual and literary analysis.
