Abstract

This study explores how principle-based guidance can support college EFL learners in expressing the behavioral component of attitude in spoken English. Although learners can easily articulate feelings and opinions, they often struggle to express what they actually do or intend to do. To address this gap, the study introduces the FACT principles — Firm, Action-oriented, Consistent, and Targeted — as a set of pedagogically grounded guidelines for helping learners produce clearer behavioral expressions. These principles encourage learners to voice firmer stances, specify concrete actions, avoid contradictions between expressed attitudes and reported behaviors, and articulate future intentions more explicitly.

Drawing on a teaching design and a self-recorded micro-lesson featuring teacher–student interaction, the study illustrates how explicit prompting combined with FACT-based scaffolding helps learners move beyond opinion-centered language toward expressing commitments and intended behaviors. The findings suggest that principled oral-expression instruction can make the behavioral dimension of attitude more accessible in EFL classrooms and contribute to learners’ broader pragmatic development.
