The Academic Administration Guideline on the Integrated Instruction of Local Ethnic Culture and School Curriculum at Pu’ er University in Yunnan Province

Abstract

The research objectives were 1) to investigate the problems and needs of integrated instruction of local ethnic culture and school curriculum, and 2) to propose guidelines for academic administration on the integrated instruction of local ethnic culture and the school curriculum. In phase 1, the samples were divided into three groups: 1) 387 students, 2) 222 teachers, and 3) 133 academic administrators selected through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were questionnaires. In phase 2, five teachers, five experts, and five administrators participated in a focus group interview to share ideas and experiences on integrating local ethnic culture with the school curriculum. The instrument used was the interview form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The findings revealed problems and needs in integrating local ethnic culture with the school curriculum and in implementing integrated instruction at Pu’ er University. The academic administration provided guidelines for this integrated instruction, including curriculum plan development, building a resource database, selection of teaching methods, building a team of qualified teachers, practical teaching management, and curriculum evaluation. This study offered guidelines for the universities and provided practical examples from ethnic regions to support related educational theories.
