Abstract

With a projected market value of over $400 billion by 2030, the global sports equipment sector is expanding quickly. Growing fitness culture popularity, rising health consciousness, and continuous advancements in sports equipment are the main causes of this upsurge. The industry’s growth, however, presents serious environmental problems. This causes industry to produce a lot of consumer-driven waste every year, which exacerbates environmental damage and puts a burden on landfill systems. This paper investigates how circular economy (CE) principles can be adopted within the sports equipment industry to mitigate these negative impacts. The circular economy prioritizes closed-loop frameworks to reduce waste and optimize resource efficiency, positioning itself as a sustainable alternative to the conventional linear “take-make-dispose” model. The study explores key CE strategies, including durable and recyclable product design, low-carbon and sustainable manufacturing processes, modular construction, and robust post-consumer recycling frameworks. Real-world examples from leading global brands such as Adidas, Nike, Anta, and Decathlon are analyzed to highlight successful CE implementations. Furthermore, the paper identifies core challenges that hinder CE adoption-such as material complexity, cost constraints, and low consumer engagement-and proposes actionable solutions including policy incentives, educational campaigns, and standardization of materials. Ultimately, the findings suggest that with coordinated efforts among manufacturers, consumers, and policymakers, the sports equipment industry can transition toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future while maintaining product performance and market competitiveness.
