Abstract

In the digital age, innovative educational methods are rapidly evolving, with game-based learning (GBL) emerging as a promising approach. However, complex topics such as zakat, a key pillar of Islam, are often taught traditionally, lacking engagement and relevance for younger generations. This study explores the potential of incidental learning through a mobile paddy farming simulation game designed to teach paddy zakat regulations. Using a quasi-experimental design, 179 undergraduate students were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group browsed farming and zakat-related websites, while the experimental group engaged with the Padi MAS mobile game. Pretest and posttest quizzes were used to measure their knowledge of paddy farming and zakat regulations. The results showed that while the control group demonstrated significant knowledge improvement, the experimental group’s knowledge gain was limited, primarily due to incomplete engagement with the game. The findings suggest that digital games hold potential as educational tools, but proper engagement and design are crucial for achieving successful learning outcomes.
