Abstract

This study explores a novel approach to education management by examining the impact of indigenous language-based leadership training on effective school management in rural secondary schools of Edo State, Nigeria. Despite the growing emphasis on professional development for school administrators, the role of culturally grounded training using local languages, such as Bini, Esan, and Etsako, remains unexplored. This research investigates how leadership training delivered in indigenous languages influences principals’ decision-making, community engagement, and teacher motivation, ultimately affecting school performance. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 120 school principals and 300 teachers across 60 rural secondary schools in Edo State through surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings reveal that indigenous language-based training significantly enhances principals’ communication efficacy, fosters stronger community-school partnerships, and improves teacher morale, leading to a 25% increase in student attendance and a 15% improvement in academic performance metrics. These outcomes highlight the potential of leveraging linguistic cultural assets to address leadership challenges in education management. The study recommends integrating indigenous language training into national education leadership programs to promote inclusive and contextually relevant school administration practices. This research fills a critical gap in education management literature by introducing a culturally sensitive approach to leadership development in a multilingual, rural context.
