Abstract

Aluminum Foam Sandwich (AFS) panels are proving to be highly advanced lightweight structures that have the potential to offer an exceptional combination of high bending rigidity, low density, and high energy absorption capacity. These panels are made of dense aluminum face sheets integrally bonded with an aluminum core, thus providing improved bending rigidity as well as impact resistance in comparison to metallic materials of similar weight. Although titanium hydride (TiH2) is the most widely used foaming agent, difficulties in the control of the release of the gas have led to the development of improved stabilization techniques. Recent developments in the use of hybrid foaming systems, nanoparticle reinforcement, and processing routes have shown significant improvements in the uniformity of the structure as well as the reliability of the material properties. This article covers classification, processing routes, stabilization techniques, structure-property correlations, acoustic properties, thermal properties, and industrial applications, while highlighting the future research directions in the development of AFS panels.
