- Abstract
In recent years significant studies have been conducted on lightweight magnesium and its composites so that they can replace relatively heavy aluminum and steel products in automobile industry. Therefore, to fulfill the demand of applications where there is sliding between different components we need superior wear resistant magnesium materials. In the present review article, the role of various solid lubricants such as graphite, CNTs, MoS2 and WS2 on the dry sliding wear behviour of magnesium and its alloys has been investigated. The different fabrication techniques and their latest advancements/modifications for fabrication of self-lubricating magnesium composites are discussed with special focus on stir casting. The worn-out surface shapes were also examined in order to determine the unique wear mechanics. It has been revealed that adding solid lubricants to magnesium and related alloys improves dry wear qualities by forming a shielding sliding film between sliding counter parts.
