- Abstract
Archimedes’ method is a quick technique used for estimating the relative density of (or residual porosity in) additively manufactured metallic components. It calculates the relative density of a component by measuring its weight in different fluids and then exploiting the differences between densities and measured weights. As this method relies heavily on the density differences between the measuring fluids and the component, the results become highly dependent on the measuring fluids used. Usually, in this technique, air acts as one fluid, leaving only the second fluid open for selection. The problem gets more complicated for lightweight alloys as the effective density difference declines further, thus requiring a more careful selection of measuring fluids. Addressing it, this study presents a detailed investigation into the impact of secondary measuring fluid density on the relative density calculations and attempts to provide reasoning for the differences that arise. The relative density of additively manufactured AlSi10Mg samples was calculated using four different secondary measuring fluids – DI Water, Ethanol, Acetone, and Cyclohexane. Differences between the calculated densities for each sample were highlighted, and potential reasons were explained. The study provides a conclusive viewpoint into the selection of secondary measuring fluid for Archimedes Method.
