Abstract

Aiming to produce durable dental materials, there have been significant advancements in dental material manufacturing in recent years. Biomaterials used in the treatment of dental caries have the potential to alter the mechanical, physiological, and chemical conditions in the oral cavity. Dental materials consist of ceramic, metal, and resin composites, and their strength and durability. Dental materials with a metal base are often amalgam (silver, copper, and zinc combined with mercury), while materials with a ceramic base include feldspathic porcelain with glass fiber nanoparticles. It successfully mimics the aesthetic characteristics of tooth substance and uses biocompatible materials. In resin-based dental composites, the resin is typically triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), which is filled with nanoparticles of silica or nanomaterials like glass fiber, carbon nanotubes, and halloysite nanotubes (HNT), which are considered to have antibacterial qualities, and are employed in dental applications. To create glass fiber-reinforced composites, dental materials, mainly resin polymers, are reinforced with glass fibers as fillers. Glass fiber-reinforced composite was beneficial to dental materials in many ways, but there were certain drawbacks as well, according to numerous academic publications. This review gives a comprehensive view of the various types of dental composite materials and its constituents (matrix and fillers), manufacturing methods and their mechanical properties.
