- Abstract
Dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMES) generate out-of-plane motion through the interplay between a prestretched elastomer membrane and a flexible frame. This work presents a dimensionless parametric study of rectangular DEMES to identify design parameters that maximize actuation range. Six dimensionless parameters are introduced for membrane properties (α, ᾱ, β) and frame geometry (γ, ζ, ζ̄), enabling size-independent design conclusions. Two parametric studies are performed over an electric field range of 25–70 MV/m. Maximum actuation is achieved when both the normalized stiffness ratio (ᾱ) and membrane geometry ratio (β) are large, while thin and narrow frames consistently outperform stiffer configurations. Frame thickness emerges as the dominant geometric parameter due to its cubic influence on bending stiffness. The dimensionless framework yields broadly applicable design guidelines for DEMES actuators across scales and materials.
