Abstract

Fuel treatment is vital for enhancing the performance and stability of engine fuel and for reducing contaminants and improving combustion characteristics that are important for good emission control. The article employs a comparative analysis of the major desulphurization technologies such as hydrodesulphurization (HDS), Biodesulphurization (BDS), and extractive catalytic oxidative desulphurization (ECOD) in terms of efficiency, energy consumption, cost and industrial applicability. Key fuel contaminants which affect the durability of the engines and the formation of the emissions are discussed, including sulphur compounds, water, asphaltenes, solid particulates, trace metals and microbial growth. The benefits of fuel additives to enhance ignition quality, lubricity, corrosion protection and low-temperature operability are also explored. The environmental aspects of fuel treatment are emphasized with sustainable fuel treatment strategies. This review aims to integrate and summarize fuel treatment technologies and their contribution to operation of an engine in a way that supports efficient and environmentally responsible engine operation.
