Abstract

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a powder bed fusion technique based on the use of a laser. It is commonly used for the fabrication of metallic components with complex geometries. Ti–6Al–4V alloy is the most popular material for aerospace and biomedical applications because of its enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Dimensional accuracy and form errors are the major problems associated with the Selective Laser Melting technique. In the present study, the influence of important Selective Laser Melting parameters such as layer thickness, laser power, scanning velocity, and orientation angle on the dimensional accuracy and form errors of Ti–6Al–4V alloy are investigated. For this purpose, the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array has been used. Specimens are produced using AutoCAD-based CAD models converted into STL format. Dimensional and form errors are measured by a coordinate measuring machine. Signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance are carried out for the analysis. Regression equations are formulated for dimensional accuracy and form errors. Utility theory is used for the optimization of the important parameters. The results show that layer thickness and orientation have significant effects on dimensional accuracy and cylindricity; however, the major factor affecting flatness is the laser power. The confirmation experiment verified the suggested models with a confidence level of 95%, thus validating the robustness of the developed methodology for optimizing the accuracy of the Ti–6Al–4V part produced by the SLM.
