Abstract

Local governments are crucial actors in advancing sustainable development, as they are responsible for implementing policies and initiatives that directly affect communities. Their localized approach enables them to address specific social, economic, and environmental challenges effectively. Local governments translate national and international sustainability goals (like the SDGs) into actionable policies and programs tailored to local contexts. They provide essential services such as waste management, water supply, and transportation, which are fundamental for community well-being and environmental sustainability. By mapping the SDGs locally, local governments can effectively identify and prioritize community needs, ensuring that initiatives are relevant and impactful. This tailored approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also promotes long-term sustainable development by fostering collaboration, enhancing local capacity, and building community ownership. Ultimately, this localized effort is vital for achieving the SDGs and improving the quality of life for all citizens. Thus, this conceptual review examines the intersection of local government functions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by understanding key dimensions, challenges and opportunities, in advancing sustainability goals, ultimately contributing to resilient and thriving communities.
