Abstract

An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the effect of digital storytelling activities on writing ability of the Tourism Students in Politeknik Negeri Samarinda. The data was collected from writing tests administered to 48 Tourism Students before and after the implementation of digital storytelling. 24 students in experimental group were exposed to a treatment in which they participated in creating digital storytelling activities for 5 days. Within those days, they followed three stages of digital storytelling creation, namely preparation process, production process, and presentation process. Those activities were conducted in the classroom and computer lab. Based on the descriptive statistics, it revealed that after creating digital storytelling, the writing average score of the experimental group escalated significantly to 58.06 which previously was at 44.40. Two-way multivariate analysis of variance (Two-Way MANOVA) was also used to evaluate the obtained data in order to get the clear result on the effect of the treatment. The results showed that there was statistically significantly difference on the writing ability for the experimental group after the implementation of digital storytelling activities, F(1, 46) = 8.98; p = .004 which indicated that digital storytelling activities affected their writing. Furthermore, the writing aspects were remarkably improved was on language use and content aspects.
