Abstract

The study focuses on enhancing the quality of human resources, particularly among students, through project-based learning, which aligns with the primary goals of education in Indonesia. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through interviews and observations, examining the activities undertaken by teachers and students to promote positive character development. Behaviorist learning theory serves as the foundation for character building in students and serves as the primary analysis in this study. Field findings indicate three key areas of focus: teacher and student knowledge, instructional design considerations, and the implementation of project-based learning. Teachers possess more detailed knowledge of the direction of character building in students, including understanding the current government’s focus on character development. Furthermore, this knowledge is used to develop learning design aligned with the goals of character building, ensuring a holistic character-building process, both during and outside of the classroom. Project-based learning is one option for teachers to shape student character in line with Indonesia’s human development goals. The implementation of project-based learning to strengthen student character is supported by school facilities and regular evaluations that enable the development of follow-up plans for learning activities. This study recommends that project-based learning have a plan integrated with real-life practices in the community that students can use as a portfolio after graduation. The findings obtained from the research can be used to contribute to finding learning patterns that can shape students’ character holistically and inform opportunities for developing learning that is relevant to the formation of students’ character.
