Abstract

Research purpose:

The purpose of this paper aims to empirically explore the impact of innovation on the trade performance of Vietnamese enterprises.

Research motivation:

Innovation is usually considered as a key factor to support trade performance of firms, especially in driven-exporting countries like Vietnam. Few studies have analyzed in depth the impact of innovation on trade activities in Vietnam.

Research design, approach, and method:

The paper uses a panel probit model using the World Bank Enterprise Surveys for the period between 2005 and 2023. The paper provides the estimated results with separate components of trade and aggregate trade. Besides, alternative innovation measurement is used for estimation to check the sensitivity of outcomes.

Main findings:

The key findings show that process innovation and product innovation are the two main drivers of export and import, followed by foreign direct investment (FDI), sunk costs at custom gates, and firm capacity. However, the single factor is that the firm has no impact on the export probability of the enterprise.

Practical/managerial implications:

Given the empirical findings, the paper provides economic insights to contribute to the design of tools and the creation of appropriate work policies to promote trade performance of enterprises through innovation activities in developing countries.
