Abstract

Indonesia is a nation rich in historical heritage. Greater Malang has served as a silent witness to the extensive journey of the Indonesian nation, particularly during the post-independence era, which was characterized by dynamic struggles and development. The construction of post-independence monuments in Greater Malang constitutes an integral effort to immortalize the revolutionary spirit of the Indonesian people while reinforcing the collective identity of the community. In the context of understanding space and events, higher education instruction still faces limitations regarding media capable of visually and interactively representing historical sites and monuments. Concurrently, university students’ comprehension of local monuments in their immediate surroundings remains relatively minimal. This condition underscores the necessity for a more profound study on the potential of monuments as local heritage-based historical learning resources. This study aims to analyze the potential of Indonesian post-independence monuments in Greater Malang for history education, as well as the preservation measures that can be implemented. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a literature study method, this research conducts an analysis of various relevant written sources. The findings of this study include: (1) an understanding of the historical context of the post-independence era in Greater Malang; (2) the distribution of post-independence monuments in Greater Malang; and (3) the relevance of post-independence monuments in Greater Malang to history education. This research is expected to foster the integration of local heritage as a contextual and meaningful learning medium for university students.
