Abstract

Roughage and concentrate are two types of diet which have important role in dairy industry where both of them are complementary to each other. In terms of feeding, the amount of roughage and concentrate in the diet will have positive and negative impact to the dairy animal performance. This review aimed to evaluate the effect of roughage and concentrate ratio on milk production, rumen characteristics and behavior of dairy animal. The changing ratio roughage and concentrate in the diet has effect on milk production and quality which is related to the nutrient supply used for synthesis of milk properties. Dairy cow and goat which is feed by high concentrate ratio will produce more milk production, lactose, protein and solid non fat (SNF) compared with low concentrate level, but the ratio between fat:protein content is lower. Increasing ratio of concentrate to roughage in the diet also effect to the rumen characteristic. It will increase dry matter intake (DMI), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake, digestible carbohydrate intakes, propionate concentration, and soluble carbohydrate. However, conversely it can reduce ammonia emission (NH3), methane emission (CH4), fiber digestibility, chewing activity, saliva production, decreasing rumen pH, ratio acetate/propionate, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) and has potency on acidosis. On feeding behavior, a high ratio of concentrate to the roughage in diet will make dairy animal stop to eating sooner, spent less time in rumination and chewing.
