- Abstract
Running has become an urban lifestyle choice and a response to the dense, stressful conditions of city life, offering both an escape and a means to maintain physical and mental health. In cities like Palembang, the rise of the middle class has fueled greater awareness of fitness, with running emerging as a popular option. The sport’s popularity has grown alongside the Strava application, which not only enables performance tracking and social interaction but also serves as a symbol of status and identity, known as the ‘kalcer runners’ phenomenon. The growth of running events, communities, and wearable technology has further strengthened this trend. This study examines how social practices on Strava shape and express social identity, using Pierre Bourdieu’s framework of “(habitus × capital) + arena = social practice” to reveal how individual habits, supported by various forms of capital, naturally produce social behaviors within their social contexts.
