- Abstract
Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng competed in the women’s singles final of table tennis. Since the Chinese team had already secured the gold and silver medals, the outcome of the individual player was inconsequential; it was an honor for the nation whatsoever. Nevertheless, an uncivilized behavior emerged at the game venue. Regarding incivility, scholars posited that incivility as exposure to uncivil messages and expressing uncivil opinions; commonly refers to foul language used in online discourse; incivility is the expression of disrespect and offensiveness toward others. Given the current literature, there is a lack of research on the incivility expressions of the fan community, particularly on Chinese social media platforms. This study intends to examine the formation and dynamic of the specific event, that is, Sun Yingsha’s fans’ incivility expressions toward other fans. Through a digital ethnography approach, this study observed different fan groups’ social media comments and posts, which incited conflicts between ingroup and outgroup individuals.
