Abstract

Previous studies have shown that antioxidants in beetroot (Beta vulgaris) extract may aid in nephron protection and exhibit anti-hypercholesterolemic effects by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of beetroot extract as a nephroprotective and anti-hypercholesterolemic agent in D-galactose-induced Wistar rats, to support the potential use of beetroot as a natural health supplement. This research employed an experimental laboratory and histopathological approach using a true experimental design with a post-test-only control group. The research sample consisted of 35 male Wistar rats aged six to eight weeks, obtained from the Pharmacy Laboratory, which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples were induced with D-galactose and subsequently administered beetroot extract and vitamin C as interventions. The results demonstrated that beetroot extract exhibited significant nephroprotective effects with p-values of 0.000, 0.001, 0.001, 0.006, 0.000, and 0.000, and significant anti-hypercholesterolemic effects with a p-value of 0.000. Beetroot extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight showed more significant nephroprotective and anti-hypercholesterolemic effects compared to 250 mg/kg body weight, indicating its potential as a natural therapeutic supplement.
