Abstract

This study explored the efficacy of the combination of the inductive thinking learning model and character sketching strategy in improving students’ ability to write fiction, highlighting the importance of choosing the proper learning model to enhance students’ creative and critical thinking skills. In addition, this research also aimed to maximize the results of creative writing learning by combining the two approaches. This study uses the randomized pre-test-post-test control group design (RPPCGD), which is a randomized design by giving pre-test and post-test to the experimental group Character Sketching-Oriented Inductive Thinking (CS-OIT) and control group (expository). The effect of both teaching strategies is calculated through the difference between the pre-test and post-test of both groups. Results indicate that the combination of the two models is proven to be effective in bolstering students’ creative and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the character-sketching strategy enabled the students to create detailed characters in fiction. The combination of the two approaches yielded a comprehensive inductive thinking model that fostered students’ creative and critical thinking skills. In addition, the results of this study can contribute to the field of learning design with new ideas to improve critical and creative thinking skills and the intellectuality of Indonesian students in writing creative prose fiction.
