Abstract

Undeniably, students’ motivation to learn is influenced by the skills they possess. In the 21st century, students need to master literacy skills so they can be well-prepared for future careers and personal life. Likewise, students with strong literacy skills can develop high motivation to achieve better in learning. Literacy skills are the starting point for understanding various fields of knowledge. In this case, the teacher could become a facilitator and innovator in the classroom, especially in helping students develop reading literacy skills. RUKO REKREASI is a literacy program that aims to facilitate students’ reading activities as well as understanding, communicating, and applying the information obtained from the activities. The program has been implemented along with the application of comics, videos, and other teaching media. Given the circumstances, we were intrigued to conduct a study on the implementation of RUKO REKREASI to reveal the effectiveness of the program on the reading literacy of students in elementary schools in Bandung, Purwakarta, Karawang, and Garut Regencies in West Java, Indonesia. The qualitative descriptive analysis showed that 23 out of 27 students involved in the program were able to answer questions based on texts provided on the summative assessment. In addition, 93% of students’ parents agreed that reading literacy activities needed to be carried out continuously. In short, this study revealed that RUKO REKREASI had a significant impact on students’ learning motivation and reading literacy skills.
