- Abstract
This study examines the forms and illocutionary speech acts of interjections in gender-based language varieties as portrayed in Yasushi Akimoto’s drama “Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou”. Data were collected using a note-taking method and analyzed through qualitative descriptive analysis. A total of 150 instances of interjections were identified in male language varieties, 42 in female language varieties, and 47 in deviations from these gendered norms. The findings reveal that interjections serve as markers of both male and female language varieties, with deviations also observed. In male language varieties, interjections include types such as kandou (impression), outou (response), and yobikake (address term), which may express positive, neutral, or negative emotions. Female language varieties feature kandou, outou, and yobikake, but these are limited to positive and negative expressions. Further, illocutionary speech acts associated with interjections differ across varieties. In male language varieties, interjections perform assertive, expressive, commissive, and directive functions. Female language varieties exhibit assertive, expressive, and directive speech acts, while deviations feature assertive, expressive, and directive functions as well.
