- Abstract
Appraisal Theory has provided a workable tool for scholars to analyze interpersonal relationships through evaluative linguistic resources. The theory consists of three fundamental subsystems: Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation. Research abounds on Engagement resources in the research article genre, but the focus remains on linguistics and education disciplines. Scant research has been done on economics. Thus, this research delves into how writers of economic articles engage the audience to build interpersonal meaning in the introduction section. It draws on the framework of Martin and White (2005) and the rhetorical moves of Swales (Swales, 1990) and (Swales, 2004) to investigate the interplay of monoglossic and heteroglossic engagement in building interpersonal relations. The analysis of 35 economic research article introductions yielded several common patterns in data. Although the number of expanding and contracting options differs in these patterns, they are both persuasive and effective. This research serves as a foundation for novice writers of economics, as well as learners in this field, in the process of producing their research reports.
