- Abstract
This research examines the roles of Harry Potter fans in Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia within the participatory transmedia ecosystem of the Harry Potter universe. Using qualitative methodology, thematic analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews revealed three key findings: (1) Creative/informative roles expand the fictional world and initiate new participants while influencing observational fans’ discursive engagement; (2) Recreational roles drive cultural sustainability through expansion, re-creation, and redistribution of media products; (3) Andean communities exhibit distinct hierarchical engagement where recreational fans orchestrate communal practices despite limited industry recognition. Crucially, while creative roles maintain social media visibility, recreational actors serve as primary agents of cultural continuity through co-creation and gift economy dynamics. The study advances Global South perspectives in fandom scholarship, demonstrating how resource-constrained communities develop unique participatory frameworks that challenge Anglo-centric models of fan engagement.
