Abstract

The contemporary educational landscape is undergoing a critical transition, shifting from fragmented, rotation-based instruction toward holistic, learner-centric paradigms. This integrative review examines the role of Art-Integrated Learning (AIL) as a multifaceted transdisciplinary practice essential for adolescent development. Despite its potential, AIL is often misinterpreted as a peripheral aesthetic activity rather than a rigorous cognitive stimulus. Following a systematic six-stage integrative review protocol, this study synthesises 84 peer-reviewed items published between 2015 and 2025 to evaluate the efficacy of AIL in fostering adolescent value formation and psychosocial growth. The review identifies three primary interdisciplinary pathways: resilience through creative inquiry, symbolic identity negotiation, and social-emotional empathy. By positioning AIL within ‘Transformative Practice Zones,’ this study demonstrates how artistic inquiry serves as a co-equal dimension alongside core scholastic concepts, bridging the gap between high-stakes standardised testing and the psychosocial needs of the adolescent learner. The findings reveal that AIL requires significant teacher agency and generative cognitive effort to facilitate deep, durable learning. However, institutional implementation remains hampered by resource scarcity and a ‘holistic fallacy’ regarding causal evidence. This paper concludes by proposing a new direction for AIL: integrating computational creativity, systemic teacher capacity building, and process-based assessment metrics to ensure its long-term viability as a transformative foundation for 21st-century education and civic participation.
