- Abstract
Road damage is an important problem in transportation infrastructure that is often caused by heavy vehicle loads that exceed capacity. This study aims to determine the effect of heavy vehicles on road damage using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and Benkelman Beam (BB) methods. Road condition assessment is carried out through a survey according to the PCI method, while the BB method uses the Benkelman Beam tool to measure back deflection. The survey results show that road segments with a heavy vehicle volume of 70% have very low PCI values, ranging from 7 to 20, indicating severe to very severe road conditions. In contrast, segments with a heavy vehicle volume of 30% have much better PCI values, which are around 77 to 83, indicating good conditions. In addition, the back deflection analysis shows that road segments with higher heavy vehicle volumes also have higher deflection values. The highest deflection of 2.15 mm occurred in segments with a heavy vehicle volume of 70%, while the lowest deflection of 0.52 mm occurred in segments with a heavy vehicle volume of 30%. The conclusion of this study is that heavy vehicles significantly affect the level of road damage. This is evidenced by the low PCI value and higher deflection on road segments predominantly used by heavy vehicles, compared to segments less used by heavy vehicles.
