Design of Speed Control on a Prototype Conveyor in the Metal Processing Industry Based on Material Mass

Abstract

In the distribution of ore or coal materials in the metal processing industry, there is a target mass of tons/hour in its distribution using a conveyor. However, the mass cannot be predicted based on time because the conveyor operates at a constant speed. This results in the desired mass not being achieved within a specific time. To overcome this, this study created a conveyor speed control system using the Arduino Mega 2560 as a microcontroller that receives input from the load cell, encoder, and F-to-V converter. Conveyor speed control is carried out using the BTS 7960 motor driver, the PWM value of which is controlled based on reading the material mass value from the load cell. Based on testing, the study’s results showed that for every 100 grams added, there was an additional 0.52 seconds to complete one conveyor movement cycle. As for the conveyor motor speed, there was a decrease of 20 rpm for every 100 grams added. Conversely, the conveyor speed is directly proportional to the loading time in one cycle. So, based on these data, a mass of 1 kg/5.5 seconds was obtained according to the desired settings.
