Abstract

Natural and local materials play a crucial role in conservation and environmentally friendly building practices, particularly in the construction of Bajo tribal houses along the coasts and small islands of Indonesia. This study investigates the utilization of these materials in Bajo stilt houses, which are uniquely adapted to their marine environment. The research explores the types of local materials employed—including wood, bamboo, and silar leaves—and analyzes how traditional construction techniques integrate environmental considerations and local knowledge. Data was collected through field observations, interviews, and drone mapping in three Bajo settlements. The findings reveal that the Bajo community continues to prioritize locally sourced materials in response to environmental conditions and natural factors, influencing the design of structural elements like columns, beams, walls, and roofs. This approach not only ensures structural integrity but also reflects a deep understanding of and respect for the environment. The study highlights the importance of preserving these traditional practices for sustainable coastal development.
