- Abstract
A simulation of shoreline change at Talise Beach in Indonesia has been conducted, with an emphasis on analyzing the impacts of the 2018 Palu Bay tsunami on the rapid coastal morphological change and validating the effectiveness of the GENESIS numerical model in simulating shoreline changes. Indonesia’s extremely long coastline is vulnerable to catastrophic natural disasters, requiring quantitative assessment of longshore sediment transport and shoreline evolution to be imperative. Through a multifaceted analysis incorporating tidal data, bathymetry surveys, wind records, and sediment analysis, the GENESIS model was parameterized and subsequently augmented by the STWAVE model for wave transformation analysis. Simulation results reveal that longshore sediment transport has a profound influence on Talise Beach’s morphological characteristics, with a 10-year simulation yielding a maximum accretion of 9.30 meters and a maximum erosion of -1.75 meters. The GENESIS model effectively replicated shoreline modifications, underscoring its utility in forecasting coastal behavior and informing management strategies. This study underscores the significance of integrating numerical modeling with empirical data to enhance comprehension and mitigate coastal hazards in dynamic environments such as Talise Beach.
