Abstract

This study examines the effect of the blackening method on the corrosion rate of Widia Tools in seawater and rainwater immersion media. Blackening is a black oxide coating process that aims to protect metal from corrosion and increase wear resistance. The blackening coating procedure goes through the stages of making NaOH, NaNO₂, and NaNO₃ solutions, as well as the pickling process for surface cleaning. Microstructural analysis shows the formation of a thin layer of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) on the coated metal surface, which functions as a corrosion barrier. Corrosion testing uses the weight lost method with specimen testing times on the 7th, 21st, and 49th days. The results showed a decrease in the corrosion rate of around 33% between immersion of Widia tools in seawater and rainwater. Seawater provides a decrease in the corrosion rate based on consecutive test days of 0.03 mpy, 0.01 and 0.003 mpy, while rainwater provides a decrease in the corrosion rate based on consecutive test days of 0.005 mpy, 0.003 and 0.002 mpy. Seawater has a high salt content so it has a more corrosive environment compared to rainwater. Its shows that blackening is effective in increasing corrosion resistance so that the service life of Widia tools is longer, especially in industrial applications with corrosive environments. The application of blackening technology to Widia tools offers a solution to improve the performance and durability of cutting tools in the manufacturing industry.
