Abstract

This research discusses the richness of values in the Aluk Toyolo tradition and the impact of the transformation of Aluk Toyolo on social relations, traditional rituals, and cultural integration in the Mamasa local community with the current changes. Lies in research data sourced from five years of experience in the Mamasa community, 1978-1983, and a book review from Keis Buijs in 2006 entitled Power of Blessing From the Wilderness and Heaven. Apart from books, researchers also quote and refer to opinions and previous research results a lot. This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis methods. The research results show that the structure and transformation of the Toraja religion in Mamasa are not only influenced by external changes, such as the entry of Christianity but also by internal processes within the community. The presence of new religions creates different adaptations among people, depending on age, social status, and personal views on traditions. This transformation leads to the formation of religious hybridity, where elements of the aluk to dolo tradition are absorbed into the current context to maintain continuity of cultural identity. These findings enrich our understanding of how the Mamasa community responds to modernity and globalization in the local context. This research also highlights the importance of an inclusive approach in religious policy in Indonesia, so that indigenous peoples can maintain their cultural heritage within a framework recognized by the state.
