Abstract

Settlements should be able to provide comfort and livability for their residents, complete with access to basic facilities such as clean water and sanitation. The settlement in Neighborhood II Benteng Sungai Belawan Bahari reflects a more complex reality. This area is a green zone and should not be allowed to be used as residential land. This research aims to explore the social, cultural, and economic lives of women shellers in Benteng Sungai Belawan II Bahari. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to understand the social, cultural, and economic lives of women shellers in the neighborhood of 2 Benteng Sungai Belawan Bahari. The results of the research slums, limited access to basic facilities, and the social stigma attached to the river fort community further worsen living conditions. The uncertainty of income from shelling exacerbates their level of welfare, with many women having to face difficulties in meeting their daily needs. Cultural poverty is an important factor in exacerbating this situation. Existing cultural norms in the community tend to limit opportunities for women to access higher education and skills, which in turn narrows their chances of getting better jobs.
