Local Wisdom and Coastal Community Attitude Toward Mangrove Conservation in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract

The existence of mangroves in coastal areas provides various benefits, especially for local communities. For this reason, the community has a central role in mangrove management to realize sustainable development. The aim of this research is to analyze knowledge, community attitudes and local wisdom in mangrove management in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. This research uses quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and interviews. The respondents in this research were members of the mangrove farmer group, totaling 109 people. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data through qualitative content analysis. The research results show that community knowledge of mangroves is relatively high (mean 3.98). Community attitudes towards mangrove management are classified as extremely high (mean 4.29). The local wisdom of the community in managing mangroves in Langkat Regency includes that every felling of mangrove stems must obtain permission from the village government, any felling for commercial/sale purposes is not permitted, if it is discovered that there is illegal logging, legal sanctions will be imposed and sanctions in the form of replanting mangroves, stems and dead mangrove branches are allowed to be used.
